Fire and ambulance service is provided by the La Junta Fire Department and the John Fisher Hose Company. The Fire Department has seven full time fire officers, who double as dispatchers at night and on weekends.
When an emergency call is received that requires a fire or ambulance response, the on-duty engineer responds with the appropriate fire or EMS apparatus, directly to the emergency scene. Volunteer firefighters/EMS staff from the John Fisher Hose Company respond directly to the scene in their own cars.
The Hose Company members are all volunteers, carrying forward a tradition of community service that began with the formation of the Company in 1883. The Hose Company volunteers keep all of their equipment with them, so it is ready to hand in any emergency.
The Fire Department and John Fisher Hose Company are responsible for fire and ambulance service in the La Junta Fire district, which comprises some 365 square miles of the eastern portion of Otero County. They are responsible for all emergency medical services, as well as structural and wildland firefighting, rescue, and hazardous materials incidents..
The Hose Company has 33 members. Of these, 27 are fully qualified EMT's, Basic and Intermediate levels. 15 of the Hose Company members are certified at the Firefighter II level; 6 at Firefighter I, and 4 are in training as new members.
There is also an 8-person HAZMAT team to deal with any type of hazardous materials incident.
